This online catalogue chronicles the exhibition entitled “Łódź Celebrates the 450th Anniversary of Shakespeare’s Birth,” which took place at the University of Łódź Library from 7 April to 1 May 2014.The idea for the exhibition was put forward by the International Shakespeare Studies Centre, and realized by the representatives of the Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of International and Political Studies at the University of Łódź, who are also members of the Centre. Furthermore, this event would not have taken place without the support of the University of Łódź Library.

This collection of essays is in part the result of an international research project “Revisiting the Renaissance: Poland and the Low Countries in Early Modern Europe – The Culture of Self-Deception”, which was carried out by the British and Commonwealth Department of the University of Lodz in Poland and the Vakgroep Nederlandse Literatur en Alegemene Literatuuretenschap of the University of Ghent in Belgium (2009–2012). The goal of this project was to validate the ongoing debate on the Renaissance by looking at its significance in European civilization through the prism of marginalized cultures. As the essays presented in this volume demonstrate, the scope of our interest has grown over time so that issues such as literature, religion, diplomacy, politics, and arts are seen not only from Polish and Netherland perspectives. This book is a unique publication on the sixteenth-seventeenth European culture, politics and societal studies. Although the book is primarily addressed to scholars and academics who study the Renaissance / Early Modern episteme, it can also attract the attention of many other circles of readers interested in an interdisciplinary discourse devoted to e.g. governance, theology, religion, politics, diplomacy and literature. Since the essays focus on facts, processes, texts and state formations, which do not generally belong to the general discourse, they pose a challenge to the conventional perception of the period under discussion.

Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance features discussions, analyses, reviews and ideas that witness and contribute to the understanding, presentation and reception of Shakespeare in the world, especially outside the boundaries of the English-speaking world. Editors-in-chief: Professor Krystyna Kujawińska Courtney, University of Lodz, Poland, and Professor Yoshiko Kawachi, Kyorin University, Japan. Assistant editor: Dr Katarzyna Kwapisz Williams, University of Lodz, Poland Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance 4 (19) is a thematic volume tilted “Shakespeare and Europe: History – Performance – Memory,” collected by a guest editor, Professor Lawrence Guntner. It is focused on the history of Shakespeare on the European stage which, according to Guntner, can be divided roughly into three phases: the quest for national identity from the mid-eighteenth century to 1918: the end of the First World War and with it the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Tsarist Russia (Shakespeare in “Old Europe”); political Shakespeare from 1918 to 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet bloc (Shakespeare in a Divided Europe); and what Guntner calls “transformational Shakespeare” since 1989 (Shakespeare in “New Europe”). Contributors include: Lawrence Guntner, Monika Smialkowska, Keith Gregor, Tina Krontiris, Veronika Schandl, Jacek Fabiszak, Mark Sokolyansky, Stuart Hampton-Reeves, Francesca Rayner, Patricia J. Lennox, Nancy Isenberg, Bryan Reynolds. /Szekspir w nowej Europie/
